The Case of Alvin Mansell:
In 1925, Alvin Mansell was at the receiving end of a death sentence and a lynching in a case where he was widely believed to be innocent. Mansell’s case reveals the compromises at the extremities of the Jim Crow justice system in North Carolina and the south and the way in which preserving a racial order relied on creating and recreating a set of tolerable exceptions to intolerable acts of violence.
