Parr Center Presents: Angela Sun, “Do Snitches Get Stitches?”
Many groups, ranging from labor unions to student groups to the mafia, discourage members from sharing information about the group’s activities with the authorities. In this talk Professor Sun proposes an account of the circumstances under which such anti-snitching norms are justifiable. She maintains that anti-snitching norms grew out of a need for subordinated groups to protect their autonomy, and argues that they are justified when they continue to serve this purpose.
The talk concludes by exploring grassroots alternatives for responding to wrongdoing within subordinated groups, including peer mediation and gossip.
Angela Sun is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Washington & Lee University, where she teaches classes in ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of race, logic, and decision theory. She is a fellow of the National Humanities Center in 2024-25. Her research investigates such topics as integrity, commitment, self-governance, and moral action under oppression.
Light refreshments will be served at 6:30.
