NHSEB wins APA/PDC Prize for Excellence and Innovation

We are thrilled to announce that The National High School Ethics Bowl is the winner of the 2021 APA/PDC Prize for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs! We’d like to thank the American Philosophical Association and the Philosophy Documentation Center for their consideration, as well as our resilient community all across the country who made this achievement possible. The NHSEB team very much looks forward to accepting this prize at the APA’s 2022 Eastern Division meeting in Baltimore, MD, in January.

The Prize for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs has been jointly sponsored by the APA and the PDC since 1999. It recognizes philosophy departments, research centers, institutes, societies, publishers, and other organizations for creating programs that risk undertaking new initiatives in philosophy and do so with excellence and success, and to publicize the success of these programs so they may inspire and influence others to follow their lead. From the selection committee: The selection committee recommends the National High School Ethics Bowl for this prize. Prior to the pandemic, NHSEB was already excellent and facilitated the participation of 4,000 high school students across the country in navigating thorny contemporary ethical issues. During COVID, however, NHSEB shifted their focus to access and to on-boarding new participating high schools through their NHSEBBridge program, which soon evolved into the NHSEBAcademy and became an online hub for students, coaches, judges, and volunteers to crowdsource ideas about ethical perspectives, gain perspectives on cases from NHSEB experts, and collaborate to address significant ethical problems. The Academy is evidence of philosophers doing their best work in a public forum, to advance the public good.
