Vazquez and Team Awarded Templeton Grant

Georgia State University and the John F. Templeton Foundation have awarded the Parr Center a multi-year research award!

Led by PIs Michael Vazquez and Michael Prinzing, this project investigates the role of extracurricular programs in cultivating intellectual humility (IH) in adolescents, particularly in relation to ethical and political questions. Specifically, the proposed project aims to examine whether participation in the National High School Ethics Bowl (NHSEB) fosters IH in students, and whether a novel pedagogical program called “Ethical Conversations” can replicate the benefits of NHSEB for students not involved in the program. The expected outputs of the project include scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals, a report for the NHSEB Executive Committee, and a white paper for educators on implementing the Ethical Conversations program. The project has the potential to provide valuable insights into promoting IH in high-stakes contexts and contribute to the development of strategies for fostering intellectual and civic virtues during the schooling years.
